Robotics is rapidly moving beyond the image of machines performing pre-programmed industrial tasks. In 2026, the combination of artificial intelligence, advanced sensors, computer vision and physical AI is pushing humanoid robots toward a new generation in which machines can understand their surroundings, learn tasks and interact with the physical world.
The scale of this transformation is becoming clearer in China. At the 2026 World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, more than 2,000 robots competed across 51 categories. One Chinese humanoid, Tiangong Ultra, completed the 100-metre sprint in 8.64 seconds—faster than Usain Bolt's 9.58-second human world record. Yet experts say speed is only a small part of the story; the more important challenge is whether robots can reliably perform complicated tasks in factories, warehouses and homes.
The industry is already beginning to make that transition. Global humanoid-robot shipments exceeded 22,000 units in the first half of 2026**, nearly three times the level of a year earlier, according to Counterpoint Research. The research firm expects shipments to surpass 50,000 units during 2026. Manufacturing and warehouse applications are also gaining a larger share of deployments. ([Counterpoint Research][2])
Automobile manufacturing is emerging as one of the most important testing grounds. Companies are experimenting with humanoid robots for activities such as handling components, logistics and repetitive assembly work. BMW, for example, is advancing its work with Figure AI's humanoid robots at its Spartanburg plant in the United States..
China is also pushing aggressively toward commercial deployment. Chinese manufacturers have demonstrated humanoids sorting parcels, packing products and performing household tasks, while some manufacturers have already secured industrial orders from major companies.
But the biggest question is not whether a robot can run, walk or lift a heavy object**. The real breakthrough will come when a robot can enter an unfamiliar environment, understand a simple human instruction and safely complete a complicated sequence of tasks without constant human intervention.
That challenge remains significant. Current humanoids can still struggle with dexterous manipulation, unexpected objects, balance and dapting previously learned skills to completely new situations. Even industry leaders caution that a true robotics equivalent of the “ChatGPT moment”*may still be several years away.
The direction, however, is unmistakable. Robotics is gradually shifting from automation of individual tasks to physical intelligence—machines that can perceive, reason, act and learn in the real world.
The next revolution may therefore not happen inside a computer screen. It could happen on the factory floor, in warehouses, hospitals, offices and eventually homes, where intelligent machines work alongside people.
